Gate Posts

Explore our range of gate posts for creating strong, stable and correctly supported garden gate installations. Gate posts carry the weight and movement of the gate, making it important to choose a suitable section, length and material for the size of the opening and the type of gate being fitted.

Our range includes timber gate posts and compatible post options for pedestrian gates, side gates, garden entrances and heavier framed gates. Larger and heavier gates generally require more substantial posts than standard fence panels because the hinge side must support repeated opening, closing and movement over time.

Pressure-treated timber gate posts provide a traditional appearance and help improve resistance to rot, fungal decay and general outdoor weathering. They can be used with closeboard gates, tongue and groove gates, picket gates, framed garden gates and other suitable timber designs.

Gate posts are available in selected lengths and section sizes for different installations. The correct post should allow for the finished gate height, sufficient depth below ground and the position of the hinges, latch and surrounding fencing.

Choosing the Right Gate Post

Choose the post section according to the gate’s width, height, weight and construction. The hinge post usually carries the greatest load and may require a larger section than the latch post, particularly for wide or solid gates.

Select a post long enough to allow sufficient depth below ground while maintaining the required finished height. Ground conditions, wind exposure and the weight of the gate should all be considered when deciding the installation depth.

Check that the post provides enough surface area for the selected hinges, latch and other gate furniture. Heavy gates should be fitted with suitable heavy-duty hardware and fixings.

Installation and Care

Install each post vertically and accurately spaced using suitable post-mix concrete or an approved fixing system. Allow the foundation to set correctly before hanging the gate or applying significant load.

Check the opening width and gate clearance before fixing both posts permanently. Leave sufficient space for the hinges, latch and natural timber movement so the gate can open and close without catching.

Where pressure-treated timber is cut or drilled, apply a suitable end-grain treatment to exposed areas. A compatible post cap can also be fitted to protect the top and provide a neat finish.
