Choosing the Right Trellis or Arch

Choose the trellis design according to the required level of screening and the desired appearance. Closely spaced lattice provides increased privacy, while more open designs retain greater light and airflow.

For fence-top installations, check that the existing posts and panels can support the additional height and wind exposure. Suitable extension posts, battens and exterior fixings may be required.

When choosing a garden arch, measure the pathway or opening carefully and allow enough width and height for comfortable access. Consider the mature size and weight of any climbing plants that will be trained over the structure.

Installation and Care

Secure trellis panels to suitable posts, walls or fencing using exterior-grade screws, brackets or battens. Wall-mounted trellis should be spaced slightly away from the surface where appropriate to allow airflow and room for plant growth.

Install garden arches on a stable base and ensure both sides are vertical, level and securely fixed. Check for underground pipes, cables and drainage before installing posts into the ground.

Where pressure-treated timber is cut or drilled, apply a suitable end-grain treatment to exposed areas. Inspect fixings periodically and trim climbing plants where necessary to prevent excessive weight from building up.
