Choosing the Right Gate

Measure the opening carefully before ordering and allow sufficient clearance for hinges, latches and natural timber movement. The finished gate width should suit the opening while leaving enough space for smooth operation.

Choose the gate height according to the required level of privacy and the height of the surrounding fencing. Solid gates are best for private side passages and enclosed boundaries, while picket and slatted gates are suitable where a lighter, more open appearance is preferred.

The supporting posts must be strong enough for the gate’s weight and size. Larger or heavier gates may require substantial timber, concrete or compatible steel gate posts, along with heavy-duty hinges and fixings.

Installation and Care

Install the supporting posts vertically and securely before hanging the gate. Use suitable exterior-grade hinges, latches, bolts and screws, and check that the gate opens in the required direction without catching on the ground or surrounding fencing.
