Choosing the Right Trellis Panel

Choose the batten pattern according to the desired level of privacy. Open square and diagonal trellis retain more light and visibility, while closer-spaced privacy trellis provides increased screening around boundaries, patios and seating areas.

Measure the available space carefully and check the panel orientation before ordering. Some trellis designs can be installed horizontally or vertically, while others are intended for a specific position.

For fence-top installations, ensure the existing posts and fencing can support the additional height and increased wind loading. Suitable extension posts, battens or brackets may be required.

Installation and Care

Secure trellis panels to suitable timber posts, fencing or masonry using exterior-grade screws, brackets or battens. Wall-mounted trellis may benefit from a small gap behind the panel to allow airflow and provide room for climbing plants.

Support the trellis evenly to reduce movement and avoid placing heavy plant growth onto the panel before it is securely installed. Vigorous climbing plants should be trimmed periodically to prevent excessive weight from building up.

Where pressure-treated timber is cut or drilled, apply a suitable end-grain treatment to exposed areas. Check fixings periodically and replace damaged battens where required.
