Wooden Fence Posts

Explore our range of wooden fence posts for building traditional, practical and reliable garden fencing. Timber posts provide a natural appearance and can be used with a wide variety of fencing systems, including closeboard panels, waney lap panels, decorative panels, trellis, feather edge fencing and post and rail installations.

Wooden fence posts are available in different lengths and section sizes to suit low garden boundaries, standard panel fencing, taller privacy fencing and heavier-duty installations. Choosing the correct post size is important for providing enough support above ground while allowing sufficient depth below ground for a secure installation.

Many of our timber posts are pressure treated to help improve resistance to rot, fungal decay and general outdoor weathering. Pressure treatment helps protect the timber throughout the post, making treated wooden posts a practical choice for long-term outdoor use.

Wooden posts can be fixed directly into the ground using suitable post-mix concrete or installed with compatible post supports and bolt-down brackets where appropriate. They can also be cut, drilled and fixed more easily than concrete posts, making them suitable for both professional installers and DIY fencing projects.

Choosing the Right Wooden Fence Post

Select the post section according to the weight, height and style of the fencing being installed. Larger post sections provide additional strength and are generally more suitable for taller panels, heavy gates and exposed locations.

Choose a post length that allows for the finished fence height, any gravel board and sufficient depth below ground. The installation depth will depend on the post length, ground conditions, fence height and exposure of the site.

Where a fence terminates or changes direction, suitable end or corner posts may be required. Three-way layouts may need an additional timber post or specialist arrangement depending on the fencing design.

Installation and Care

Install wooden posts vertically and at the correct spacing using suitable post-mix concrete, ground supports or bolt-down post holders. Keep the post aligned while the fixing material sets and avoid loading the post with heavy panels too early.

Where pressure-treated timber is cut or drilled, apply a suitable end-grain treatment to exposed areas. A compatible post cap can be fitted to help protect the top of the post and provide a neat finished appearance.

Check for underground pipes, cables and drainage before digging. Periodic inspection and maintenance can help identify movement, damage or exposed timber before further deterioration occurs.
